Like in many cities around the world, during the halt of cultural activities caused by the pandemic, there has been a highly concerning issue regarding the acceleration of the gentrification process in artistic neighborhoods. As a result, a multitude of venues, studios and creative spaces – places used for exchanging ideas with our peers, for communicating our concerns and fears, for building communities meant to inspire and to nurture our souls, have shut down.
In the spring of 2021, after fifteen months of sanitary restrictions, sound artists Eric Quach (Thisquietarmy) and Jim Demos (Hellenica) decided to drive around Montreal to perform a series of secret live sets from a cube truck, as an act of appropriation of public spaces. The allegorical documentation of these performances depicts a cautionary tale that mirrors what the music scene would look like in a post-pandemic world, as artists are being pushed further away from the core city.
